Grass

Perhaps the most annoying part of moving into a new construction house is the no lawn thing. We were really hoping to get our grass in in the spring but it's been a long drawn out process. First we had to wait for the snow to melt, then for the builder to remove the dirt piles in the back, then for the ground to dry out so they could level the yard, then for the sprinklers to be put in, then the grass seed we wanted was on back order, then after trying we realized there was no way we could prep the clay dirt ourselves so we had the sprinkler guys do it, then we had to wait for a damaged sprinkler to be replaced, and have finally laid the seed a few weeks ago.

And here's the front yard this morning (as seen from the front door). It's patchy but it's a start! We didn't plant in the area closest to the front porch so we can finish it with landscaping in the spring.

Looking out the back door. The back isn't doing as well as the front. The grass seed said not to over seed, and I think we ended up under-seeding.

That little section seems to be doing the best. The dry section of dirt in the lower right corner is where  my garden will be, it butts up against the house.

We're excited to see the progress it's making, the kids like to go out and feel the grass and see how much it has grown every day. It's fun to finally see a color other than brown. The other houses on the street have been laying sod and I love looking down the street and seeing grass instead of dirt. It's starting to feel like a real neighborhood instead of just a road full of construction.
The yard is definitely going to be a work in progress. We'll reseed in the spring to fill in all the gaps, and go from there. There's still a lot we'd like to do over the years but for now, as long as we have grass, I'm happy.
