Back when I was a Bear Leader we talked about taking the boys up to Quake Lake as part of their geography belt loop. I had never heard of it, but it's in Montana, by the beautiful areas of Island Park and West Yellowstone, and has a fascinating history. In the summer of 1959, there was a huge earthquake that took out a mountain side, sending it crashing down onto the sleeping campsites below. It caused major flooding and dammed the river creating Quake Lake. 5 relatives of my fellow bear leader (her aunt, uncle, and cousins) were among those campers who were killed and buried under the rubble of the earthquake. Anyway, her new partner couldn't make the trip so she asked me to join them and help drive the boys up there.
We had lunch and watched the little video they have at the visitors center, then explored the area. It was a nice afternoon and the boys had a blast climbing all over the rubble. Naiya was a bit more timid when it came to the rocks, so she mostly stuck with me.

| Calin is hard to spot b/c he's wearing gray. He's left of center and closer to the top. |

| This is the face of the mountain that collapsed. |
 |
| That's Quake Lake, what used to just be a river. |
 |
| More climbing. These boys didn't stop moving the entire time. |

| Gorgeous views. I love mountains! |

Interesting story. The mountains are beautiful.
How long of a drive was that? That would be fun to explore around.
